The Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics at Hamburg University of Technology has pioneered the study of soil degradation, a major impact of climate change. It has also been a leading advocate of what it calls “climate-informed engineering”. The institute wanted to communicate the real-world implications of its research to a broad audience.

Solution

I researched what the Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics does and discovered that its researchers were harnessing artificial intelligence to supply data for a Europe-wide digital database of soil health. I used this insight as the basis for a film treatment that highlighted the crucial importance of this work and how it draws together many of the defining issues of the modern world, from the importance of international co-operation to climate change, AI and big data. I then wrote a website editorial to work in tandem with the film by explaining some of these issues in more detail, creating a multimedia package that communicates cutting-edge research in a clear manner to a broad audience.

Result

The film and feature are distributed on the UNESCO World Engineering Day platform, which reaches tens of millions of viewers around the world. The institute now has a package of multifaceted marketing materials that are scientifically robust, while remaining appealing to a wide range of viewers and readers.
